Description

Daemon_9 is an experience that defies easy description. In pure gamer terms, it can be called a Full-Motion Video game; and an ARG (Alternate Reality Game). But in reality it is a new storytelling paradigm, part movie, part game, part augmented reality experience.

Daemon_9 tells the story of Morgan Shane, a young woman who has mysteriously disappeared — possibly after brutally murdering her college roommate and lifelong friend, Anna Hendricks. But what could turn a sweet, innocent girl into a bloodthirsty monster? That is the burning question being chased by an anonymous young man who knew both girls and who has undertaken a quest for the truth — a quest for which he has turned to the public for help. And, wittingly or not, by delving into the mystery yourself, you have taken up that challenge. Can you unravel the mystery simply by sifting through a backup copy of a hard drive, watching found videos, analyzing police documents, and venturing out to the web to fill in the backstory? And more importantly, can you do it before whatever dark force took control of Morgan finds you?

Daemon_9 is a supernatural thriller that puts you, the player, in the heart of the story.

HISTORY

Daemon_9 is the brainchild of Jeffrey Jackson, a multimedia artist based in Los Angeles. Jeff blends a strong background in graphic design, storytelling (he is an accomplished filmmaker and playwright), and full-stack web development. Jackson largely created Daemon_9 single-handedly, writing, directing and editing the full-motion video segments as well as tackling the game programming. As he explains it, “I’ve always been a guy who wears a lot of hats, so while it may not have been the most time-efficient way to create Daemon_9, I feel I know every inch of it intrinsically. That allows me to make a richer, more tightly integrated story experience.” Jeff describes approaching the creation Daemon_9 “as a filmmaker rather than a gamer, to keep it intrinsically rooted in the cinematic.”

Daemon_9 is about as “indie” as it gets. But working largely solo made the process a slow one. Filming took place in early 2014, with post-production and programming consuming the next 18 months. Jackson tried his hand at a Kickstarter campaign in Autumn 2015 to raise completion funds, but the effort failed to reach its goal, so Jackson funded the balance of the project as he had everything else up to this point — out of his own pocket. Fortunately, past experience taught him how to stretch a micro-budget, and the on-screen results are far more polished that the finances would suggest.

The initial version of Daemon_9 was purely web-based and was launched in November 2017. User response was over-the-top positive, but without the imprimatur of a major publisher or an established gaming platform, breaking through to a wide audience was elusive.

So in early 2018, Jeff envisioned a new version of Daemon_9, adapated as a standalone app, deliverable on the Steam platform, where it launches on Halloween — October 31, 2018. “In some ways,” Jeff explains, “this new version of Daemon_9 is even tighter than the original. The story feels crisper and the fear is less visual but more cerebral and suggested, which makes it way scarier and more impactful.”
